13 Movies That Destroyed Solo: A Star Wars Story At The Box Office

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Just barely edging out Clash of the Titans is the 2014 Michael Bay-produced live-action Turtles reboot. With Bay's name slapped all over the marketing and a juvenile tone clearly intended to appeal to hormonal teenage boys - hence the presence of Megan Fox - the film pulled a Clash by similarly multiplying its $125 million budget almost four-fold.

As iconic and much-loved as the TMNT brand is, it's not exactly enjoyed consistently sterling success at the box office with its various iterations over the years. This is a textbook example of a movie that massively over-performed, all the more impressive and inexplicable as it released the week after Guardians of the Galaxy.

Finding a rhyme or a reason here isn't easy, beyond the movie marketing itself perfectly to sweaty teens. Even so, beating Solo by around $100 million is one hell of a result (or rather, one hell of a fail for Solo).

2016's sequel, Out of the Shadows, however grossed less-than-half of its predecessor, delivering a mercy blow to this sorry rendition of the IP.
