How It Ended: After admitting that he flew the plane drunk and that he's an alcoholic at the NTSB hearing, Whip (Denzel Washington) is shown in prison talking to a support group.

He tells his fellow inmates that he feels like he did the right thing by admitting to his mistakes, and then is later shown having a visit from his son, having seemingly made amends.

How It Should've Ended: The prison scenes feel massively tacked on, as though mandated by a nervous studio, because a much sharper ending would simply be Whip admitting "I'm an alcoholic" at the meeting.

We don't need to see a squeaky-clean finale where he betters himself, because it's much more interesting if we have no idea whether Whip will be able to fix his issues, such is the ambiguity of substance abuse and, indeed, life.
