13 Movies You Won't Believe Are Being Rebooted Already

3. John Carter

The Original: Despite Disney committing $250 million to its budget, having animation maestro Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E) as its director and an all-star cast including Willem Dafoe, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Hayden Church, Dominic West, Mark Strong and, yes, Taylor Kitsch, John Carter was a notorious box office bomb, just barely making its budget back and opening to wildly mixed reviews. Much of the blame has been placed at the feet of Disney, who marketed the film horribly, eliding the word "Mars" from the title for fear of alienating more casual audiences, while the final title instead told them absolutely nothing about the movie. Whatever the true cause, plans for a franchise were promptly put on hold as an autospy was performed on the shockingly unsuccessful picture. Time Since The Last Movie: 2 years, 8 months The Reboot: With Disney's rights to the property now expired, Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. are reportedly gearing up to reboot Burroughs' series of 11 Barsoom novels. Given the original movie's catastrophic failure, it's almost certain Kitsch won't be cast in the role again as a soft reboot, so expect this to be a full-on, hard reboot with a hot young actor in the role, and hopefully a more modest budget that's decidedly less risky.
