8. J.K. Simmons Is Basically The New Dr. Silberman - Terminator Genisys
The Movie: Terminator Genisys was, as expected, a depressingly desperate attempt to reignite the classic franchise, sacrilegiously reconfiguring the timeline to erase the two best movies and start again with a parallel timeline. Though Arnie's still got the chops, Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtney are terrible, the action is dull, the humour sucks, and it's blandly directed by Alan Taylor. The Overlooked Positive: Easily one of the movie's best decisions was hiring J.K. Simmons to play a detective who experienced the Terminator action in 1984 and, in 2017, helps Sarah and Kyle once they show up in that timeline. His part is far too small, but he brings the movie's best comic relief and very much feels like the series' new take on Dr. Silberman (even though he's not a doctor nor the a**hole that Silberman was), a recurring supporting character who never dies but is somehow always involved in the mayhem. Simmons is signed on for more Terminator movies, so there's no doubt he'll be stealing scenes in any future sequels, and hopefully the writers will appreciate the reception to his character in Genisys and lean into that for Terminator 6 and beyond.
