13 Predictions For Next Summer's Biggest Movies
11. Top Gun: Maverick Is A Box Office Bomb
Prediction: As much nostalgia as there is for Tom Cruise's 1986 action classic, Cruise certainly isn't a bulletproof box office commodity, which combined with a whole generation of youngsters totally unaware of Top Gun, could make this a surprising box office dud next July.
It won't help at all that Maverick releases a week after Spider-Man: Far From Home, a week before The Lion King and two weeks before Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Much like 2016's Independence Day: Resurgence, this is a dubiously-demanded sequel that's releasing in an extremely crowded period and will probably be lucky to double its production costs, while embarrassingly falling short of the original film's gross.
Why It Might Not Happen: With Mission: Impossible - Fallout set to do gangbusters business, it'll certainly bolster audience esteem for the actor's dedication to his craft, and if Maverick reviews well enough, it could end up playing surprisingly well outside of its nostalgia-fuelled demo.
