6. It's All A Bit Hollow

Perhaps because the film is basically a sequence of set-pieces and momentous moments (which are loaded with fan service and the kind of mythologising of characters that becomes tiresome pretty swiftly), it€™s almost impossible to make any room for actual character development or anything like an arc. Fans might be massively excited by the idea of the battle, and in that sequence the currency for Jackson is clearly fan-baiting mega moments. But because there€™s no room to build them up, even the most lavish or weighted moments (including the death scenes) end up falling flat. And unfortunately for Jackson, no amount of heaping emotion onto things or furtive glances can mean anything other than false importance between the punches.
