13 Scariest Movie Endings That Kept You Up All Night
10. Eden Lake
Before reaching a wider audience with The Woman in Black, English writer-director James Watkins made a chilling debut with this 2008 survivalist shocker with a socially conscious edge, also notable for giving early lead roles to Michael Fassbender, Kelly Reilly and Jack O'Connell.
Fassbender and Reilly play a couple of an idyllic camping weekend by the lake of the title, which turns into a holiday in hell when they come under attack from a deranged gang of local teenagers, lead by a truly terrifying O'Connell.
As Eden Lake was released at the peak of the 'torture porn' wave, it's little surprise that things get very nasty indeed - but despite all the bloody and brutal violence, nothing can quite prepare you for what a bleak down note the film goes out on.
Having escaped from the woods and reached the imagined safety of civilisation, Reilly's Jenny staggers battered and exhausted into a garden party, where the adults present are initially keen to help her. However, it transpires that these are the parents of the very adolescents responsible for Jenny's horrific ordeal.
It seems the apples haven't fallen too far from the tree, as on learning of the fate of their children, the parents turn angrily on Jenny - and while her final fate is not shown, it's readily apparent that she isn't getting out of there alive.
