2. The Minions - Despicable Me

Whether you love the billion dollar Minions movie and its reductive distillation of the Despicable Me franchise down to a series of banana and bottom jokes or not, you can't argue with the brand power behind the little yellow sidekicks who completely overshadowed "star" Gru.

Gru is an interesting enough character in himself, what with the self-aware skewering of supervillain tropes and the nostalgic Bond influences in there, but apparently, the real key to his success was giving him a horde of barely understandable stubby sausage men to boss around.

The Minions immediately became the most entertaining part of the franchise (particularly for kids) and for a while there you couldn't move for merchandise. The fact that they're still big sellers on that front says exactly what you need to know.
