13 Terrible Recent Movies Destined To Become Cult Classics
4. Escape Plan 2: Hades
You'd be forgiven for not even noticing that a sequel to the 2013 Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring prison break thriller was quietly squeezed out onto home video platforms recently, but sure enough, Escape Plan 2: Hades is a film that actually exists.
The $20 million budget apparently wasn't enough to coax Schwarzenegger back, so returning star Stallone and supporting pal 50 Cent (!) are joined by Dave Bautista and...Jesse Metcalfe instead.
In a classically overcooked attempt to one-up the original, the heroes find themselves thrown into an ultra hi-tech prison, which ensures the movie is filled with atrocious CGI and comically elaborate sets.
You have to give the filmmakers mild credit: every cent of the budget is on the screen, even if Stallone and Bautista's screen time is pretty scant, presumably to keep those costs down.
Basically, this is a film that will win itself a decent share of ironic fans, if only because it so enthusiastically leaps off the deep end. After all, you have to begrudgingly admire a movie that casts Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz in a small supporting role and still wants the audience to take it seriously.
Best of all, it sets up a third film, which was filmed back-to-back with it and will probably drop later in the year.
