13 Things You Learn Re-Watching Jurassic World
5. It's Very Sexist
Far too many movies are accused of being sexist (even La La Land got accused of sexism for some reason) and when this happens it's usually an overreaction. In regards to Jurassic World and its treatment of Claire, however, people were 100% spot on.
The main reason why Claire is such a bad character is because of the manner in which she's portrayed. She's a painfully weak damsel-in-distress who is undermined and made to look stupid at every turn, even by her own nephews.
It's also uncomfortable how she is portrayed as a shrew who needs to be taught to chill out, and the film constantly makes a joke out of the fact that she has an uptight personality and is more focused on her career than dating. She gets one bad-ass moment at the end, but for the most part she constantly has to be saved by Owen.
Blockbusters are (very, very) slowly improving in regards to sexism, with three of 2017's biggest films (Wonder Woman, Beauty and the Beast and The Last Jedi) being female-led, but this movie proves we've still got a long way to go. Luckily, once again Fallen Kingdom was an improvement in this regard.
