8. Mad Max: Fury Road Is Destined To Be Snubbed At The Oscars
Mad Max is one of the year's best-reviewed movies by a long shot, scoring stronger notices than the majority of the "serious" Best Picture Oscar contenders so far, and yet it seems destined to probably miss out on any actual consideration because it doesn't fit the mold of a typical Oscar film. While the likes of Avatar and District 9 have ended up with Best Picture nods in recent years (and Max is certainly better than both of them), and the film has won its surprising share of Best Picture awards from respected critics groups, this just doesn't seem like the sort of film that will fly well with the Academy. Avatar recycled the plot of a previous Best Picture winner (Dances with Wolves) and District 9 had some cutting-edge social commentary going for it, but for many of the stereotypically crotchety Oscar voters out there, Fury Road is likely to be little more than a dumb, simple action flick. Time has proven repeatedly that critics and AMPAS do not always see eye-to-eye, and though it'd be a joy to even see it nominated, it seems destined to be lost in the shuffle because of the stereotypes associated with the form it takes. Hopefully we'll be wrong, but probably not. And even if it's nominated, it has zero chance of winning, so that's another snub right there, considering that in the eyes of many it's the year's best film by a mile so far.
