13 Upcoming Superhero Movies That Could Beat Civil War
7. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Why It Could Beat Civil War: Because Spider-Man was basically the best thing about Civil War, right? And an entire movie devoted to the ridiculously awesome chemistry between Tom Holland's Peter Parker and Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark could be one of the greatest buddy flicks of our time? Plus, Tony's totally gonna hit on Aunt May.
A great Spider-Man movie is hard to resist, and considering that many are already calling Holland's web-slinger the definitive cinematic iteration of the character, if his movie follows suit, it's going to wipe the floor with even the two acclaimed Sam Raimi films.
Why It Might Not: Too much of a good thing can prove exhausting, and what worked for 15-20 minutes in Civil War might not be so satisfying stretched over two hours. It really depends on the movie's choice of villain, love interest and the nature of the Tony-Peter dynamic, for while it's tough to imagine this one being anything less than really good, the portrayal could easily pale compared to his more concise showing in Civil War.
Plus, even the better Spidey movies to date have leaned far too heavily on the "sympathetic scientist who gets turned into a villain by his own creation" trope, and generating palpable stakes with such an inherently goofy protagonist isn't all that easy.
