13 Upcoming Superhero Movies That Could Beat Civil War
6. Wonder Woman
Why It Could Beat Civil War: Warner Bros have boldly elbowed Marvel Studios out of the way to try and deliver the first good female-fronted superhero movie, one directed by an actual woman no less. That's already earning Wonder Woman plenty of positive PR, and considering that she was an easy highlight of Batman v Superman, expectations are naturally high for her solo movie.
With an awesome-looking Gal Gadot starring opposite Chris Pine and a supporting cast including powerful women such as Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen alongside actors Danny Huston, David Thewlis, and Ewen Bremner, there's a lot to be optimistic about.
Patty Jenkins' last theatrical release, Monster, won Charlize Theron a Best Actress Oscar, and while we won't be expecting the same for Gadot, this should be a potent period piece and vibrant celebration of female power that hopefully helps bolster the unsteady DCEU.
Why It Might Not: Screenwriter Jason Fuchs is responsible for the risible Ice Age: Continental Drift and Pan, which is really worrying. Also, if the movie panders too much to external politics, it could detract from the overall experience, and period blockbuster films always struggle a little more to draw audiences in: just look at Captain America: The First Avenger.
It almost certainly won't be bad, but it could easily just be OK-to-average.
