13 Worst Decisions Hollywood Has Made In 2017 (So Far)

7. Netflix Gets Booed At Cannes

There was a major uproar at this year's Cannes Film Festival over the inclusion of two Netflix-distributed movies, Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories, in competition for the festival's coveted Palme d'Or, to the extent that the Netflix title card was heavily booed during screenings for Okja.

Cannes later announced that, from next year, only movies with planned French theatrical releases would be eligible for the award. It's clear from this aggressive move that the French film industry is more desperate to protects its interests than ever, but it's a move that ultimately comes off as extraordinarily petty.

While it's not strictly a response coming from Hollywood, it's important to note how ferociously protective the American movie industry similarly is of theatrical models being threatened by streaming, and Cannes has set a precedent that stateside festivals will probably follow later this year.

What they fail to understand is that the digital revolution is only going to ramp up in the coming years, and its supremacy is all but inevitable. Adapt or perish, guys.
