Near the end of June, Daniel Day-Lewis made the shock announcement that he will be retiring from acting after his final performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's period fashion drama Phantom Thread, due out at the end of the year.

Day-Lewis' publicist refused to shed any further light on the legendary three-time Oscar-winner's decision, though subsequent reports suggested that the actor was planning to work as a dressmaker for the foreseeable future, having taken a shine to the craft while working on his upcoming film.

Though it's hard to argue with the actor's incredible career of unforgettable performances, as film lovers it's also easy to be incredibly greedy and hate that DDL has decided to retire at the relatively young age of 60.

Good for him, of course, but the film world will be so much poorer as a result.
