14 Announced Movies That Are Never Coming Out
4. Dune
This is another controversial pick, but when Denis Villeneuve was hired to direct this new adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel in late 2016, Legendary Pictures probably assumed that Blade Runner 2049 would be at least a solid box office success.
It tanked, and though Villeneuve remains attached as director and he's even cast Timothee Chamalet to play protagonist Paul Atreides, this reeks of a project that will never actually get off the ground.
For starters, it'll need a monstrous budget and, given the off-kilter strangeness of the novel, the studio may ultimately balk at handing so much money to Villeneuve.
Plus, with the novel reportedly being split into two movies, the scope of the production could simply be too much for Legendary's coffers to handle.
Though Villeneuve is hoping to start shooting early 2019, don't be surprised if everything falls through and Legendary decides to make a lower-budget TV series instead. They acquired both the movie and TV rights to Dune at the point of purchase, so it's probably the more sensible, less-risky way to go.
