A movie adaptation of Hideo Kojima's classic video game franchise was first confirmed by Kojima himself back in 2006, though lingered for close to a decade without any cast or crew being attached.

In 2014, Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) was hired to direct, and though his passion for the project is undeniable, even posting concept art for the movie online recently (pictured above), it's just hard to imagine this thing ever getting off the ground.

For starters, it'd need a massive budget, which runs counter to the fact it'd also have to be bats*** insane to be faithful to Kojima's vision, and would likely alienate the more casual moviegoers it needs.

Economically it just doesn't make sense unless the film is morphed into a more generic, palatable blockbuster, but given Vogt-Roberts' fandom of the franchise, that doesn't seem likely.

Don't be surprised if the director drops out amid creative differences in the near-future and the project remains in development hell for a while until it's quietly cancelled.
