14 Cinematic Questions We Demand To Have Answered in 2013
11. Will Paranormal Activity Ever Die?
At some point in the future, people will start looking back at the Paranormal Activity saga with increasing mirth: "hey, remember when we all fell for that trick where the same film was released every year with a different title?" The same thing happens now in the world of video games when people discuss Call Of Duty - a property hounded for its perceived lack of progression and its willingness to recycle every element under a new coat of paint - and hopefully it won't be too long before cinema goers start to realise the pleasure taken from the new Paranormal Activity film is minimal compared to what else could be enjoyed with the same resources. Like sticking pins in your eyes and ears.
Sadly the fifth film is already pencilled in for October 2013, and if it makes money, there will be a sixth. Why wouldn't there? As long as an audience responds to the same thing over and over, the "risk" of that practice is outweighed by the pay-off. No matter how damaging it is to the industry as a whole.
And it's not just Paranormal Activity: 2013 will see sequels for the Fast & Furious franchise, the Hangover, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Die Hard and Scary Movie - all of which we could happily do without - and unnecessary second outings for Grown-Ups and The Last Exorcism (which some might consider grounds to take the title of the first film to court over)
