14 Dumbest Things In The Worst Summer Movie Season Ever

12. The Dark Universe - The Mummy

Because telling a single, standalone story isn't cool anymore, the new Mummy movie spent an icky amount of its run-time trying to sell Universal's prospective Dark Universe to audiences.

Why It's Dumb: Universal very clearly put the cart before the horse here, bringing in Russell Crowe to effectively advertise the potential franchise with a flashing neon sign before this first movie in the series had even been a proven success.

As it turned out, the film was critically panned and under-performed at the box office, proving that not even the usually-reliable Tom Cruise can lure audience into movies that reek of such rampant desperation.

If Universal were smart, they would've saved all the franchise shilling for the credits, and shoved the bigger world-building into the second movie if this one had actually been a hit.
