1. Steve McQueen & John Ridley Animosity?
The biggest drama of the night came when screenwriter John Ridley won an Oscar for writing 12 Years A Slave, and strangely did not even give director Steve McQueen a handshake or a hug. In addition to this, he didn't thank McQueen in his speech, and when the camera cut to McQueen, he appeared to give a hilariously sarcastic, open-palmed clap, as though he either didn't care or had a reason not to celebrate Ridley's win. Deadline's Nikki Finke reported soon after the Oscars that, according to her sources, the cold relationship stems from an argument over the screenplay credit: presumably McQueen believes he deserves a writing credit of some kind, and Ridley refused. This proved to be even more awkward when the film's Best Picture win was announced, and the two awkwardly ignored each other on stage, like former lovers still trying to hang out together with their friends.
