14 Most Disappointing Movies From Summer 2015

11. Terminator Genisys

Why It's Disappointing: While the writing was on the wall ahead of time that Terminator Genisys probably wasn't going to be very good, that doesn't mean every card-carrying Terminator fan still didn't hold out hope that it might be better than Salvation. Sadly, Genisys is a totally confused mess and essentially plays like a big-budget Terminator fan-fiction movie, with both Jai Courtney and Emilia Clarke proving hilariously miscast, while great actors like J.K. Simmons and Matt Smith are given nothing to do, and Arnie's pretty much the only one whose performance actually functions as intended. The now-infamous John Connor twist is undeniably brave, but the movie's marketing campaign blew its load too early by giving it away in trailers, such that it's dull and predictable in the final movie. How To Improve It: Hire a better director and cast, add action sequences with more intensity and hardcore violence (so an R-rating, obviously), focus on time travel logic that actually makes sense, ditch the "Skynet is a phone app" storyline and basically don't make it a lame remix of the two best films in the series, all while trampling over their continuity. Instead of attempting to reboot the series while retaining Arnold, Genisys should've instead been the future war film that Salvation tried and failed to be. All fans want is to see the epic war scenes from the first two films extended out to feature length with compelling characters and palpable drama. It shouldn't be that hard.
