6. The Avengers

While some might not consider this an out-and-out plot twist, it is nevertheless a big reveal that absolutely didn't need to be given away in order to sell the movie.

The Avengers concludes with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) transporting a nuclear missile into a Chitauri wormhole in the sky, a heroic sacrifice which also causes his suit to lose power, sending him falling to the ground with no means of saving himself.

He's eventually rescued by The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), who leaps into the sky, grabs him and clambers his way down a skyscraper, but if you'd seen the film's trailers - which you most certainly had, many times - the moment was sapped of all its surprise and majesty.

Considering that Joss Whedon wanted us to believe that Stark may end up trapped inside the wormhole and sacrifice himself to save Earth, anyone who remembered that shot of The Hulk sliding down a building with Iron Man in-hand knew exactly what was going to happen.
