14 Movie Trailers That Spoiled Awesome Plot Twists
9. The Cabin In The Woods
Now, there's sure to be some debate about exactly how much the marketing for Drew Goddard's horror-comedy actually spoiled, especially considering the highly spoiler-sensitive nature of the entire movie.
Though on the face of it this is just another generic horror flick set in a remote cabin, it's actually a satire on the nature of horror movies themselves, complete with a wildly unexpected sci-fi twist.
While this twist is hinted at from the movie's opening scene, it's a shame the marketing couldn't hold its poker face and just advertise the film as a straight-up, formulaic horror film, because it would've made the surprise that much more delicious.
Instead, the film's trailers show the money shot, of a bird crashing into the digital boundary set around the cabin, making it clear that something genre-bending was clearly on the cards.
Considering how well even the most pandering horror films tend to do at the box office, it might've actually been smarter to market the film as cynically as possible. As it turned out, perhaps due to those sci-fi hints, the film "only" grossed double its $30 million budget.
