Why It's Terrible: Terrence Malick's recent glut of movies have been incredibly mixed affairs, to be kind, and his latest, a sprawling romance set amid the Texan music scene, wastes a fantastic cast, as Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and many more do little of anything while Malick shoots long, ponderous takes of them staring into nothingness and occasionally whispering poetic monologues into a nearby mic.

Why It'll Be A Cult Classic: Malick is always going to have his defenders, and it's safe to say that his previous critical bombs have nevertheless found haven with those who insist his "dull and meandering" movies are in fact ethereal masterworks that transcend typical conceptions of cinema.

Song to Song is just the latest Malick film to massively divide viewers, and with how warmly it's being embraced by the director's faithful devoted, it's fair to say that the cult already has it.
