11. Mortal Kombat

Say what you will about Paul W.S. Anderson, but his 1995 Mortal Kombat movie actually replicates the style and tone of the video game franchise reasonably well, even if it undeniably would've benefited from an R-rating to serve up a slew of gory fatalities.

Still, the film was a major hit even if critics weren't too enamoured, and led to an horrendously awful 1997 sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which effectively committed a fatality on the series' cinematic tenure.

A new Mortal Kombat movie has been planned for a long time in various forms, and the latest update has James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring, Furious 7) producing a remake/reboot directed by unknown talent Simon McQuoid.

The most exciting part? It's reportedly been pitched to Warner Bros. as an "R-rated Avengers", and the studio is attempting to lock down many name actors for the game's most iconic roles.

As entertaining as the original is, it's hardly a great film in any classic sense, and with the major edge that an R-rating will give the new movie, it could easily out-do Anderson's effort, while kick-starting yet another cinematic universe.
