It's easy to be nervous about a remake of F. W. Murnau's unforgettable 1922 classic horror film Nosferatu, which has received consistent acclaim for its ominous tone, beautiful cinematography, lighting and direction, and Max Schreck's phenomenal performance in the title role.

However, the movie is almost 100 years old and has been remade before, with Werner Herzog's masterful 1979 film Nosferatu the Vampyre proving a sumptuous update in its own right. Now, The Witch director Robert Eggers is mounting his own remake.

Eggers is an obsessive fan of the original movie and will reportedly attempt to give the material a fresh spin far away from Schreck's iconic performance, which is probably a smart idea. Nobody's expecting this to top or even match the original, but with such a talented filmmaker at the helm, it'll probably be uniquely terrifying in its own right.
