2. Thanos Sacrifices Gamora - Avengers: Infinity War

We've talked the snap to death over the last few months, and while Thanos' horrifying final act was expected by a large portion of fans, more surprising was his sacrifice of Gamora (Zoe Saldana) earlier in the film.

After she leads him to Vormir to retrieve the Soul Stone, the spectral form of Red Skull (Ross Marquand) appears before them and declares that Thanos must sacrifice something he loves in order to retrieve the Infinity Stone.

Though Gamora initially laughs at Thanos, confident that he doesn't love anything, the mood changes when she realises he's shedding tears for what he's about to do: throw Gamora off the cliff, killing her.

It's a brilliantly disturbing sequence which does a fantastic job of fleshing-out Thanos as a complex character who skirts free of the usual evil tyrant cliches. It'll likely be undone in Avengers 4, sure, but in the moment it was absolutely jaw-dropping.
