14 WTF Moments From 2018's Summer Blockbusters

11. The Son's Horrifying Death - A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place

John Krasinski's deeply unsettling sci-fi horror film sets a nerve-shredding tone from its very first scene, as the Abbot family travels across town in quiet formation to avoid attracting the alien entities walking the Earth.

Things go south, sadly, when the family's youngest son, Beau (Cade Woodward), plays with a toy space shuttle and sets off one of its sound effects. This attracts the aliens, which dash towards Beau while father Lee (Krasinski) desperately attempts to save him.

Sadly he's a little too late, and the creature snatches Beau, killing him as we hard-cut to black.

It's a tripwire-tense sequence that quickly establishes the movie's tone and the mindset of the characters, while also somewhat explaining the inherent absurdity of Lee and his wife Evelyn (Emily Blunt) deciding to have another child in the middle of an alien apocalypse.
