15 Acclaimed Recent Movies That Are (Probably) Doomed To Receive A Backlash
2. Baby Driver
Baby Driver, an action film synched entirely to music, is yet another film that is very reliant on a single unique element - in this case, how it's edited. On a technical level Baby Driver is astonishing and understandably many will have a great time with it at first, but the problem is that the film's other elements are much less refined.
The script and story are painfully mediocre, the performances (aside from John Hamm) are forgettable, it's too long, it's not very funny and the ending is just dreadful. As such, viewers will probably go off it once they realise just how little there is to it.
It's also an irritating example of just how inconsistent the style-over-substance criticism is. Films are often criticised for that; here is a film which is completely style-over-substance... and it's hailed as a masterpiece.
It's got possibly the most illogical Rotten Tomatoes consensus ever, which features the quote "proving fast-paced action movies can be smartly written without sacrificing thrills." Err... there's nothing smartly written here.
So, thanks to both the over-zealous reviews and the complete lack of anything beyond its central gimmick, Baby Driver is doomed to hold up abysmally in the future.
