15 Actors Who Trashed Their Own Movies
2. Jim Carrey - Kick-Ass 2 (2013)
Jim Carrey received a bombardment of media coverage for staging a call to arms (no pun intended) against his own movie, Kick-Ass 2, for its…excessive use of arms.
Carrey, who stars as Captain Stars and Stripes, pulled the plug on promotion of the Kick-Ass sequel due to its gratuitous violence, tweeting:
"I did Kick-Ass 2 a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence. My apologies to others involve[d] with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”
Kick-Ass 2 concluded production in November 2012, one month before the Sandy Hook school shooting, so it’s understandable Carrey’s heightened awareness regarding gun violence led to a change of heart.
It’s a fine line in cinema; some see an accurate portrayal of violence as crucial to facing the world’s fears, while others see it as unnecessary exposure to the dark side of life.
Carrey may be a king of comedy, but he failed to see the punchline in the end with Kick-Ass 2.
