Can You Ever Forgive Me? tells the true story of celebrity biographer, Lee Israel, who turns to crime after her writing career falls apart. Julianne Moore was set to play the disgraced writer but she left the project due to creative differences.

At least, that was what was originally reported. In reality, Moore was terminated six days before filming after she clashed with the director, Nicole Holofcener. Moore wanted to wear a prosthetic nose and a fat suit to resemble Israel but Holofcener refused, stating it would be distracting. This was such a sore point, it collapsed the entire production, leading to many actors being removed, including Chris O' Dowd, Sam Rockwell, and Helen Bonham Carter.

The film was greenlit a year later with a new director and Melissa McCarthy cast in the lead role. This seemed to work out for the better, since Can You Ever Forgive Me? was highly praised, received three Oscar nominations, including one for McCarthy's performance as Israel.
