In the V For Vendetta graphic novel, V is described as having a mesmerising voice, astounding martial arts skills, and the agility of an Olympic athlete. When Matrix star Hugo Weaving won the role, it sounded like perfect casting since he is known for his hypnotic voice and astounding fighting abilities.

But initially, it was James Purefoy portraying the Guy Fawkes-inspired vigilante. One month into production, the British actor dropped out, saying it was too difficult to perform as a masked character.

Because this caused a delay in production, director James McTeigue didn't have a chance to refilm the scenes that Purefoy had shot. To save time, Weaving simply redubbed the lines over Purefoy's scenes in post-production. As the director has never officially confirmed which scenes Purefoy shot, fans have debated for years who is playing the masked anarchist in certain scenes.
