15 Announced Movies That Are Destined For Development Hell
1. Avatar 3, 4 & 5
Status: Director James Cameron has expressed interest in multiple Avatar sequels since before the original's 2009 release, and though Avatar 2 is plausibly due to begin filming imminently, his claim that it will be shot concurrently with Avatar 3, 4 and 5 is a little harder to believe.
Why They're Going To Development Hell: Cameron is a notoriously methodical filmmaker, hence why it's probably going to be around the end of the decade before Avatar 2 realistically comes out.
Cameron claims that the sequels will hit in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023, but even if Cameron gets Avatar 2 out in 2018, it's ridiculous to think that a director who prides himself on taking his time can release three more movies in the span of five years.
Consider that Cameron's last three features span all the way back to 1994's True Lies and he would need an insane level of productivity to get them out in his proposed time-frame.
Most agree that Avatar 2 will happen over the next few years, but given how long Cameron takes to make a movie, is it really believable that three more films will get made in the 15-20 remaining years Cameron realistically has left as a filmmaker?
It's possible that other directors could take over, but in the way Cameron envisages them right now, they're probably not happening.
Which announced movies do you suspect will end up in the developmental abyss (pardon the pun)? Shout them out in the comments!
