15 Australian Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die

7. 100 Bloody Acres

There’s a Tucker and Dale vs Evil vibe to fraternal directing duo Cameron and Colin Cairnes feature debut 100 Bloody Acres. Country bumpkin Reg runs a blood and fertiliser company with his brother Lindsay – a production they supplement using roadkill Reg finds while trawling the country backroads. Just your usual kind of roadkill, you know: a kangaroo here, a deceased car accident victim there.

Business as usual is disrupted when Reg picks up three stranded city slickers whose car has broken down on the way to a music festival. After they end up discovering the brothers’ secret fertiliser ingredient, it’s to the meat grinder they must go.

There’s enough laughs in 100 Bloody Acres to hold a candle to the likes of fellow comedy horror Shaun of the Dead and its gore levels reminiscent of early Peter Jackson films while its surprisingly three dimensional protagonists and sympathetic villains set it apart from other contenders.
