15 Australian Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die
8. Lake Mungo
Shot mockumentary style, first time feature director Joel Anderson’s Lake Mungo is part chilling ghost story and part portrait of familial grief. But don’t worry: this isn’t the shaky, faux found footage style seen in the likes of The Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity. In fact, Lake Mungo is so convincing a mock-doc that it had some believing it was actually real.
After the tragic drowning death of their teenaged daughter, the Palmer family start experiencing strange goings on in their home with ghostly images of the deceased inexplicably turning up in photos and home videos. As the family investigate, they begin to find their seemingly perfect daughter’s life may not have been all that perfect after all.
More supernatural chiller than splatter fest, Lake Mungo is easy on the jump scares and gore but has enough twists and turns in its plot and genuinely eerie moments to make it an effective, low-key horror.
