15 Australian Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die

6. The Reef

The Reef 1024

With his second feature The Reef, director Andrew Traucki basically sticks to the tried and tested formula that proved successful with his debut feature Black Water. He keeps the cast small and again there’s a not so trusty vessel involved but the bestial villain is swapped for a great white shark.

Inspired by true events (because Australia is forever trying to kill you), it follows a group of friends en route to delivering a yacht to Indonesia who find themselves stranded in shark infested waters when their boat capsizes after its hits a reef and destroys its keel.

As they try to make a break for land, a particularly dogged great white picks the hapless sailors off one by one. Yes, those are real sharks in the film and no, a pod of friendly Flipper-esque dolphins don’t come along and save the day.
