15 Australian Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die
15. Wolf Creek
Partly inspired by real-life Australian backpacker murderers Ivan Milat and Bradley Murdoch (no relation to Rupert, surprisingly), Greg McLean’s debut feature film Wolf Creek takes the adventures of three footloose and fancy-free travellers and turns it into a terrifying journey to hell.
Kind of like Australia’s response to the tidal wave of torture porn that dominated noughties era horror, Wolf Creek stars a deliciously deranged John Jarratt as serial killer Mick Taylor – a Crocodile Dundee gone bad type with a keen bloodlust for offing tourists in the Australian outback in all kinds of gruesome, bloody ways.
Made for a modest $1 million it went on to gross an impressive $27.8 million worldwide and spawned a sequel, the not so imaginatively titled Wolf Creek 2. Like most horror sequels it’s not as good as the first but still worth a watch for gore hounds.
