5. Punisher
The Punisher (Frank Castle) has been played in three live action movies by three different actors - none of which have been very successful. Dolph Lundgren (1989's The Punisher), Thomas Jane (2004's The Punisher) and Ray Stevenson (2008's Punisher: War Zone) have all played the ruthless anti-hero and, despite the fairly poor reception of each movie in terms of profit, they've all kicked some serious behind. The first Punisher movie sees Frank Castle portrayed as an ex-cop whose family was murdered by mobsters. Legally declared dead, he strikes back from beyond the grave, killing mobsters wherever he can find them. The second Punisher movies sees Bobby Saint, son of corrupt businessman Howard Saint, killed by Frank Castle. Howard Saint, seeking revenge, butchers Frank's family during a family reunion and leaves Frank for dead. Castle then sets out to punish Howard Saint and his associates in a one man war. The third and final Punisher movie sees mob boss Billy Russoti left horribly disfigured by Castle. Russoti sets out for vengeance under his new alias "Jigsaw". With the "Punisher Task Force" hot on his trail and the FBI unable to take Jigsaw in, Punisher must stand up to the formidable army that Jigsaw has recruited before more of his evil deeds go unpunished. All portrayals have been relentless, tough as nails and very capable with firearms. N.B. "Punisher" also makes a fun cameo in Spider-Man 2. In the final scenes when Mary Jane runs through New York in her wedding dress, she draws the attention of a guy in a black trench coat. Sony wanted to use Thomas Jane, but they didn't have the rights to the actual character, so they used his stunt double instead.
