Release Date: September 18 The Plot: The real-life story of James "Whitey" Bulger (Johnny Depp), the most infamous criminal in the history of South Boston, who went on to become an FBI informant for three decades in order to destroy the Mafia activity taking place on his own turf. Based on Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill's acclaimed book of the same name. Why It's Going To Be Awesome: Director Scott Cooper's (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace) track record speaks for itself, the script is written by a ton of talented scribes including Cooper himself and Jez Butterworth (Fair Game, Edge of Tomorrow, Get on Up), and the rest of the cast is superb: Kevin Bacon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Jesse Plemons, Sienna Miller, Dakota Johnson, Adam Scott, Juno Temple, Corey Stoll and Peter Sarsgaard. Depp has been in dire need of a strong role for quite some time, and going from the impressive transformation job he seems to have gone through for the flick, could Black Mass place Depp firmly in next year's Oscar race? Time will tell.
