12. The Best Of Me (2014) - Michelle Monaghan
RottenTomatoes Score: 8% The Plot: Dawson Cole (James Marsden) revisits his home town for the first time in almost two decades to carry out the dying wish of a former friend, causing him to be reunited with his high school love, Amanda Collier (Michelle Monaghan), who has since married. Of course, things get even more complicated leading towards an inevitably overwrought conclusion... Why It Sucks: Another horrid Nicholas Sparks film that wastes a talented cast, the only real saving grace of this hilarious, near-self-parody of Sparks' work is the impressive cinematography, which is easily the most consistent aspect of the authors' movie adaptations. Neither Marsden nor Monaghan get much to do beyond look attractive, walk around eye-pleasing scenery and make doe-eyes at one another. There's not a single, genuine beat of emotion in the entire movie: it's all contrived to pull at the heartstrings as aggressively as possible, and ironically, when the outrageous, tear-jerking twist ending is finally unveiled, it has the exact opposite effect, surely leaving all but the most soppy audiences cold and angry (or perhaps crying only tears of laughter). Monaghan is so much better than this.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
