4. Lost River (2014) - Matt Smith
RottenTomatoes Score: 29% The Plot: Billy (Christina Hendricks) is a single mother who is trying to keep herself and her two sons financially afloat, all while the eldest, Bones (Iain De Caestecker), finds himself crossing the local thug, Bully (Matt Smith). Why It Sucks: Fair play to Ryan Gosling: he assembled a fine cast (also including Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes and Ben Mendelsohn) for his debut feature and it certainly pops from a visual perspective, but it also reeks of a film with a reach exceeding its grasp, because there's nothing here that doesn't feel borrowed from a David Lynch or Nicholas Winding Refn film. "Nice try" is the best thing that can be said about Lost River. It scarcely makes sense and insists upon itself far too much, such that the oft-misused "pretentious" label feels like a very snug fit here. Performances are mostly fine even if the whole thing plays one step away from being an accidental art-house satire. As for Matt Smith? He spends the whole film in horrible clothes, and his best scene ("Look at my muscles!") didn't even make the final cut. Just watch the visually appealing, intriguing trailer and be done with it.
