9. Safe Haven (2013) - Cobie Smulders

RottenTomatoes Score: 12% The Plot: A mysterious, troubled young woman, Katie (Julianne Hough), arrives in the sleepy town of Southport, North Carolina to start a new life, and soon enough begins to fall for a kind widower and single father, Alex (Josh Duhamel). However, it's not long before Katie's dark secrets once again begin bubbling up to the surface. Why It Sucks: Despite having a talented director at the helm in Lasse Hallström (What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules), there's little that can be done to adapt this wretched Nicholas Sparks novel into anything approaching a believable or resonant romantic drama. Though Smulders has only a relatively small role as Katie's new friend Jo, it's a pivotal one considering that the movie's laughable final plot twist revolves entirely around her character. It turns out that Jo was the ghost of Alex's dead wife the whole time, and given that this is revealed in the final two minutes of the movie, it instantly devolves a blandly inoffensive romance into one that's utterly laughable in retrospect. Granted Smulders didn't really have much to do here, but she's put right in the line of fire as far as having to deliver the absolute worst part of the movie.
