15 Awful Movies That Could Have Awesome Remakes

4. Transcendence

Why It's Awful: Christopher Nolan's seasoned cinematographer Wally Pfister delivered the year's most disappointing film to date with Transcendence, a promising sci-fi about the potential for mankind to transcend death by living on in technology, yet the muddled, occasionally incomprehensible narrative quickly derailed all that promise. The game cast weren't able to do much against Jack Paglen's inane script, which paints Rebecca Hall's scientist character as especially idiotic, while its grasp of technology (especially the nature of the Internet) is wildly off-the-charts, such that it's difficult to take its wonky logic at all seriously. The Remake: Keep the central concept the same, but as Christopher Nolan showed us with Inception, if explaining the technology is going to seem goofy, just don't bother at all: focus on the possibilities of the system rather than the system itself. Cut down on Hall's character's lovesick dialogue and make her act more like a functioning human being (and a relatively logical scientist, even in the face of grief), and also ditch the annoyingly ambiguous ending. Furthermore, give Paul Bettany's character more to do, because he's easily the most likeable and interesting thing in the whole flick.
