Why It's Awful: Paul W.S. Anderson's video game adaptation has only a cursory relation to its source material, dropping all the characters from the first game, inventing a new protagonist by way of Milla Jovovich's Alice, and pretty much following its own story, revolving around a malevolent computer system, The Red Queen, who wants to kill every survivor trying to escape from an underground facility called The Hive. The zombie make-up is awful, the acting and script are for the most part immensely hokey, and even the movie's coolest scene (the laser room) has absolutely nothing to do with the video games. Without the title and references to the Umbrella corporation, this could pretty much be any garden variety zombie movie. The Remake: Stick to George A. Romero's original rejected script for the movie, which was more horror-centric and less-focused on action (hence the rejection). Even though it changed Chris Redfield to be Jill Valentine's boyfriend, it was still infinitely more faithful to the game, taking place largely inside the Spencer mansion, which simply shows more respect for fans paying to see the movie (who brought about the prospect of the movie's creation in the first place).
