15 Bafflingly High Rotten Tomatoes Scores You Won't Believe

1. The Babadook

Critical Consensus: "The Babadook relies on real horror rather than cheap jump scares -- and boasts a heartfelt, genuinely moving story to boot." Why It's Wrong: The Babadook is a good horror film, and probably one of the best of 2014 (though that's not saying much), but it's also possibly the most overrated movie of any genre from last year. It's stylishly filmed and well acted for sure, but it's also not particularly scary, the kid is annoying as hell, and the parallel between the titular monster and depression was more obvious than the filmmakers thought. Plus, its score is a mere mouse hair away from that held by classic Swedish classic horror Let the Right One In (98% with 8.3/10). Does anyone really think this is as good as that movie? Why The Critics Liked It: This is another movie that did the festival circuit for months before showing up in cinemas, and as a result the hype train had reached such a ridiculous speed that it was always going to disappoint the "little people". After months and months of effusive 5-star reviews in another year of mostly naff horror remakes and sequels, the final product's quality was just blown way, way out of proportion. Audiences were expecting a lot more, and the opinion that "it was good but still disappointing" has seemed very popular online. Which movies do you find most unreasonably praised on Rotten Tomatoes? Shout it out in the comments!
