Critical Consensus: "Aiming, perhaps, for a neat double helix of black humor and prankishness, they've ended up with a pretty ugly granny knot." - TIME Magazine Why It€™s Wrong: The critics just weren't expecting the movie to go as dark as it did, but for those prepared to take the plunge, the result is one of Jim Carrey's most interesting and off-the-wall performances. Whether he's singing Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" or creeping around after Matthew Broderick, the movie has an underlying heart that reveals itself later on and ties everything together nicely. Plus, the general media satire is savagely intelligent and far ahead of its time, yet was largely ignored upon release. Why The Critics Hated It: Jim Carrey in a kinda-serious movie? No way! It must just be that the movie isn't very funny, right? Yep, that has to be it. It couldn't be that he wanted to try something more adventurous, no?
