15 Bafflingly Low Rotten Tomatoes Scores You Won't Believe
4. Saw (48%)
Critical Consensus: "Saw is more than nasty enough for genre junkies, but far too twisted, gory, and shallow for more discerning horror fans." Why Its Wrong: Saw kick-started arguably the most consistent franchise of horror films in history, for while the fourth and fifth entries in particular tested viewer patience, it still never quite ended up in the awful state that Halloween, Friday the 13th or A Nightmare on Elm Street did in later installments. On its own merits, Saw was a testament to the value of ideas over money, toying with viewers for 100 minutes before pulling the rug out and delivering one of the more dastardly and memorably shocking plot twists of the last 15 years. Yes, the acting could have been better and the low-budget car chase is ridiculously lame, but the plotting is generally tight and the gory torture is exceedingly imaginative. Why The Critics Hated It: Horror movies are one of the toughest genres to crack with even the most forgiving critics, as gore is always going to be divisive, as is the sadistic nature of a movie like Saw, which lingers on suffering and torture. Sadly this prevented them from enjoying the smart and fiendishly tricky narrative beneath all the blood and guts.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
