15 Bafflingly Low Rotten Tomatoes Scores You Won't Believe
3. Equilibrium (38%)
Critical Consensus: "Equilibrium is a reheated mishmash of other sci-fi movies." Why Its Wrong: While the movie may draw heavily (read: very heavily) from George Orwell, it's a smart, stylish film that's grown in appreciation over the 13 years since its release, and is undeniably a cult classic. Of particular note is the "gun kata" fighting style during shootouts, which is both highly original and visually dazzling to watch. Plus, who can forget that scene where Christian Bale shoots Sean Bean in the face for reading a book? Or when he slices Taye Diggs' face off with a sword in the most hilariously anti-climactic fight scene in film history? Why The Critics Hated It: Critics are well-read people by their nature, and so they couldn't separate the movie from the likes of 1984 and Brave New World, which it clearly draws an influence from. Nowadays, this sort of thing would be called a "re-imagining", one suspects.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
