15 Best Alien Movie Deaths
13. Ricks/Upworth (Alien: Covenant)
The abrupt ending of Ricks and Upworth’s watery lovers’ tryst makes the cut over the chest-bursting death of Billy Crudup’s Oram for bringing something new to the franchise. It’s the first time in the main Alien series that a carnal act is violently interrupted, as though previous characters had all seen horror movies before, and knew they probably shouldn’t have sex unless they have a death wish.
Ricks and Upworth apparently didn’t get the memo, however. The freshly-birthed Xenomorph stalks through the Covenant’s corridors as though searching specifically for stereotypical horror victims to slaughter, and isn’t disappointed when it encounters the pair engaged in a steamy session in the shower.
It’s a really stylish scene, with Tennessee’s tracking of the lifeform’s movements harkening all the way back to Captain Dallas’ venture into the vents. Unlike his case, however, there’s no one to tell Ricks and Upworth what’s coming, and the sight of the alien’s slithering tail on the shower floor followed by the sudden geyser of Ricks’ blood mixed with the water instantly unleashes chaos on the otherwise engaged Upworth.
The sight of the eyeless monster in the centre of the shot, framed by darkness with the shower’s jets raining down around it is immediately iconic. Although much of the carnage occurs off-screen, it’s a scene fans are unlikely to forget.
