8. Brett (Alien)

Alien 3 Ripley
20th Century Fox

Animal lover to a fault, Brett’s decision to go off by himself looking for the ship’s cat Jonesy, with full knowledge that there’s a nasty alien lurking somewhere in the darkness of the ship probably wasn’t the smartest decision for a character in a horror film.

The suspense is palpable as Brett wanders around the dimly lit abyss of shadow that is the Nostromo’s decks, the jangle of chains almost piercing as we brace ourselves for whatever’s coming. At any second, we’re anticipating the tiny critter to jump out from a small space, to drop from the ceiling, to pop up without warning, anything to provide a nasty shock.

So you can imagine his surprise, as well as ours, when his tension-drenched search is cut short by the sight of the now fully grown black Xenomorph, snarling out of the shadows. Skewering Brett, the rapidly developed beast drags him out of sight as the Nostromo’s numbers continue to dwindle.

Having Ripley discover his slowly decayed corpse cocooned in a horrifying mural later on only provides a grisly reminder of poor Brett’s fate, forever notable as the first victim of a fully formed Xenomorph. Damn it, Jonesy!
